Two longtime Eatonville residents, Lois Billy and Cynthia Bradley, are finally settling back into their homes after much-needed repairs and renovations, thanks to Rebuilding Together Central Florida. The nonprofit teamed up with BankUnited and H.E.L.P. CDC to restore the houses, ensuring they remain safe and livable for years to come.
Eatonville, one of the first self-governing Black towns in the U.S., has a deep history of resilience and community pride. Over the years, aging homes have posed challenges for residents, but initiatives like this are helping preserve the town’s legacy.
To celebrate Black History Month and the successful completion of the renovations, Rebuilding Together Central Florida’s CEO, Jose Garcia, toured the homes, highlighting the importance of preserving Eatonville’s history while improving living conditions for its residents.
Garcia says, "This is why we do what we do. The renovations done on these two homes in Eatonville not only provided needed repairs but made it so residents can enjoy the homes they live in. Work was done on one of the roofs, the bathrooms, the kitchens, the exteriors, as well as landscaping. These improvements not only improve the quality of life for the residence, it's also a physical display of Rebuilding Together's commitment towards our mission and community."
Rebuilding Together Central Florida has been making a difference since 2000 by helping low-income homeowners stay in safe and healthy environments. Their work depends on volunteers, donors, and community partners who believe in keeping neighborhoods strong and connected.
This project was made possible by BankUnited, a financial institution committed to investing in local communities, and H.E.L.P. CDC, a faith-based organization providing housing counseling, property education, and financial planning. Their combined efforts ensure that Eatonville residents can continue to live in a town that values its history while building a better future.
"As a trailblazing Black community in the U.S., investing in this area is of the utmost importance," said Garcia. "These two home renovations are just the beginning. Rebuilding Together is committed to helping more Eatonville residents stay in their homes for years to come."
Eatonville’s story is one of strength and perseverance, and with continued support, its residents can maintain the homes and community they cherish. Initiatives like this show that when people come together, real change happens—not just in buildings, but in lives.
