As soon as you enter the room, it’s clear: this is not a regular night spot. KALI Ultra Lounge has gotten the luxe treatment, and it’s now a private dining room that transforms into a club at 10:30 p.m. The restaurant’s May 15 soft opening felt more like a hard launch: it was vibrant, festive, packed with people and downright decadent.
The adjacent restaurant, Corazón by Baires, has been so busy that overflow space was needed to keep up with booked events. The solution was to redesign the lounge and create KALI Dining Room, which is closed for private events and open to Corazon guests the rest of the time.
“It’s been a labor of love, but with Corazón bursting at the seams, the first thing that came to us was the notion to annex this room,” said Wallack Holdings CEO Josh Wallack of his multi-million dollar investment in the space. “There’s more to it than that, too. We need to create a late night entertainment district on I-Drive. We are competing with Las Vegas, and they have everything — the best restaurants, nightlife, art and culture. We need to get more aggressive in going after corporate business, because right now it brings in $100 million in citywide buyouts. We can do more.”
Wallack Holdings Founder David Wallack masterminded the immersive KALI experience with help from Michael Meacham, an audio/visual designer and head of iDesign Productions, globally known for installations at E11EVEN Miami, 44 Toronto, Vanity Osaka, VIP Room and others.
The expertise shows, because the vibe at KALI owes much of its appeal to David and Michael’s attention to A/V details.
LED panels adorn interior façades throughout the club, displaying visuals that line up with the music — which gets noticeably louder as the evening progresses — and the overall sexy abundance of the décor.
More is more at KALI. No stone went unturned, no space untouched. You might think that so many flowers, pillows, paintings and colors would confuse the eye, but no. It was all thoughtfully woven together by Beyond Merritt Design, the design firm that also created the look at Corazón.
“We wanted an even more elegant experience than what Corazón already gives you, which is why it was critical to bring down Rebecca and Beth from Beyond Merritt again,” said Josh Wallack. “I would describe what they’ve done in KALI as romantically elegant.”
The menu at KALI is the same as Corazón’s, which entails Argentinian steakhouse fare that artfully blends Latin American flavors with global culinary techniques. From cold appetizers like tuna tartare with yuzu ponzu and hamachi crudo with smoked melon, to hearty entrées such as a 40 oz beef tomahawk carved tableside and Chilean sea bass roasted in Quechua curry, the food served here is dramatic and flavorful.
Pasta lovers can indulge in fettuccine tossed tableside in a Parmigiano wheel, while those with a sweet tooth can savor desserts, like an outrageous chocolate cake.
You’ll have a chance to work off the calories later that night as gorgeous dancers work the room and call guests to join them in the dance. Or, you can move downstairs to Mango’s Tropical Cafe for a more intense nightclub experience.
