Ash Cash and Friends Orlando Funny Bone

Ladies night: Comedy show brings fresh voices to Funny Bone Orlando

            Published June 19, 2025

Six local comedians are set to take the spotlight at Funny Bone Comedy Club at Pointe Orlando on June 26 at 7 p.m. for an all-ladies showcase, Ash Cash & Friends. Jonte “Taetattedup” Vaughn will host, while Danielle Mathis, Lisa Roddavis, Andrecia Baker, and Selena Ubias open for headliner Ash Cash, who will close the show.

"The comedians you're going to see are so different. We're not presenting the same energy. We're not presenting the same lifestyle or how we got here," said Mathis. “You're going to hear from a lot of different comedians in this scene who share their life and what we think is funny."

The Orlando Life met up with Ash Cash, Mathis, and Vaughn to talk about their journeys into comedy and the Orlando scene.

            Finding their way to comedy

The path to stand-up is different for everyone.

"I've been doing comedy for four years,” said Ash Cash, who is based in Melbourne. “I started out by doing a class at the West Palm Beach Improv and I really enjoyed it. A few months later, I started going to open mics and found out I actually was kind of good at it. So I just kept going. And four years later, here we are doing shows at Funny Bone."

For Vaughn, a born-and-raised Orlando native from Pine Hills, comedy felt like a natural fit.

"I started doing comedy because people told me I was funny," she explained. A conversation in beauty school led to a connection with a comedian, and after her nail salon burned down two years later, she decided to give it a try. Her first set in front of an audience was in 2021.

"I just was like, you know, let me try it. And I've been doing it ever since. Comedy feels like my natural self. I'm just regular and I don't really have to try too hard. I'm just myself on stage."

Mathis has been doing stand-up since 2019. A longtime fan of the craft, she would often seek out comedy shows when traveling to new cities, noting that it’s one of the best ways to experience a new place.

Her aha moment came from watching others.

"I just saw too many white men with ukuleles and I was like, if they have the confidence to go up on stage and do this, I think I should really do it too," she said.

Having previously worked on cruise ships, where her words always represented a company, stand-up offered a new kind of freedom: "The second I took the stage, I fell or succeeded by my own choice and my own words. If I'm succeeding up there, it's because of me."

The Orlando comedy scene and Funny Bone’s role

The comedians praised Orlando's supportive comedy environment.

"I like the Orlando comedy scene because of the comedians that are on the scene. There are a lot of hardworking comedians and we all push each other to become better," Mathis said.

She added that many show producers are also comedians, which makes the scene collaborative and growth-driven. With open mics and shows happening almost every night, Orlando offers ample opportunity to hone the craft. Its central location also allows comics to access bigger scenes in Tampa and Brevard.

When it comes to favorite venues, Mathis highlighted Bull & Bush in the Milk District.

"It's a very cozy British pub and I just think it's one of those rare mics where people are there to watch comedy. It makes for a very supportive crowd, and I feel like you can go in and really work on new material," she said.

Funny Bone, where the upcoming show will be held, holds a special place as Orlando's major comedy club.

Ash Cash appreciates it as a networking hub: "It's a place where you can do an open mic on the side stage and usually, if you go out there, you're going to see all levels of comedians who show up just to hang out."

She also noted its importance for local talent: "It's a great place for local comedians to work with bigger-name touring comedians."

Vaughn echoed this: "Funny Bone is finally letting young, underground people who don’t have as many years in comedy get on stage more now."

            Mining real life for laughs

When it comes to creating material, all three comedians primarily draw from their personal lives, though with a comedic twist.

Ash Cash said, "Eighty to eighty-five percent of my comedy is real-life experiences. I'm a narcissist, so I'm just talking about myself up there the whole time and how I go through life — then I just write a punchline into that."

Vaughn added, "All my stuff is true. It might be a little exaggerated, though — like a little bit — but most of the time, it's just the ending that's not true. The rest of the story is."

She sees comedy as therapy: "When you hear me talk about certain things, let me get it out. You guys are my therapists."

Mathis echoed this. "My stuff is absolutely true," she said, sharing that she talks about deeply personal topics like grief and her sister's passing, along with everyday topics like dating, parents, pets, and traffic.

"The world is my oyster when it comes to comedy," she said. "People can't steal my stuff. You won't see it on TikTok because I'm not making a generic joke."

Of course, using real-life material can sometimes lead to uncomfortable encounters

            .

"I have a joke where I reveal that a man was unable to perform, and he was not very pleased,” Mathis said. “But I thought the joke was worth it, so I continue doing it. I never use real names, but the person I’m talking about always knows it’s them."

Don’t miss the chance to see these talented women live. Ash Cash & Friends hits the stage at Funny Bone on June 26 at 7 p.m. It’s a 21+ event, so leave the kids at home. Come laugh, come hang out, and be part of a night that highlights the vibrant, personal, and rising voices in Orlando’s comedy scene.
